Murat Bergi was born in Samsun, Turkey, in 1982. He began working with photography in 2008, attending courses and workshops at Fototrek Photography Center, and later continued his documentary photography practice with the İFSAK Documentary LAB.
His work focuses on how elements of everyday life become politicized and made visible in public space through symbols. Architecture, rituals, the presence of people and animals in urban space, collective memory, and visual representations of power form the central concerns of his practice. He approaches photography not simply as a means of documenting events, but as a method of inquiry into how a place, a historical moment, or a social relationship is seen and understood. Through his projects, he explores the tensions between what is visible and what is represented, and between the everyday and the political.
His project Neo Ottoman – New Turkey, which examines Turkey’s nationalist, conservative, and market-oriented transformation, was exhibited at İFSAK in 2019. The photobook of the same name was published in January 2024.
